Material Wealth: Isn't it or Is it Evil?

Earlier in my journey through life from ignorance to awareness and getting informed, it came to a point when I wondered why rugged demagogues scare even the well-meaning enterprising people by associating material riches with evil.  Is material wealth evil that people get blemished by acquiring and having it?

So I reflected and contemplated even as I asked, “But what is evil and where is it attributable?...Is it something inherent in the material things possessed?...Or, is it within the inner disposition of the person in possession of those things?”

I wondered further, “Where could evil come from when The Almighty Creator God, Who Is The Eternal Creator and Ultimate Source of everything created, Is All-Good?”

Interestingly, in my persistence in searching for answers, I found that the man, Abram, whose name would be changed later to “Abraham” (Genesis 17:1-8) to whom God made a blessed promise of holistic blessings – Abundant wealth & Posterity – really did become very rich materially.  It is documented, “Now, Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver and in gold” (Genesis 13:2).  Abraham was rich, yet he remained a righteous person.

Where then could those misleading teachings come from?  For sure, they could not come from Him who is Holy and Righteous in every way!  There must have been another broadcaster of misleading doctrine that misled, confused, and scared even the unassuming people.  So, I struggled in reflecting on the matter seriously.  For, I wanted to establish the “Why” and “How” things turned out mixed-up and messy.

Isn’t it that right from the very beginning, when God Almighty created the heavens and the earth and all they contain, He looked at His wonderful creation and declared them good? (Genesis 1:31)…How then could evil proceed from a good beginning?

Soon after, I would be relieved upon learning that the Eternal Creator gave “Free Will” to man whom He created according to His image and likeness (Genesis 1:26-27).  Committing evil then is a possibility given the free-willing of human beings.  Therefore, evil is concomitant to a person’s FREE CHOICE of action that go against the Will of Him who is All-Good and the Ultimate Source and Giver of Life and everything that goes with it specifically, “Free Will”.

Clearly then, the teaching which talks of material riches as evil is a false doctrine broadcasted by the enemy of Truth – The Devil and its false preachers.

The Apostle Paul in effect made the issue clear saying, “For the love of money is the root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith, and pierced themselves with many a pang”(1 Timothy 6:10).  Very clearly, therefore, evil isn’t something inherent in the Peso or Dollar bill ITSELF or for that matter, in material wealth PER SE, but in the inner being of a selfish, greedy, or undisciplined nature of the person possessing or insatiably longing and craving for them.

Amazingly, Apostle Paul expressed his love and concern (not hatred, nor envy) for the rich people by exhorting them to use their wealth wisely and purposefully: “Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope in the uncertainty of riches, but on God who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy.  Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they take hold of that which is life indeed” (1 Timothy 6:17,18,19,NASB).
